Negative experience: I’ve had rental property for over 30 years in different locations and with different agents . My initial business with McGrath sales when buying a property was quite good and at a standard I’d expect . However my experience my with the rental division managing my property was an abysmal nightmare . The lack of professionalism mismanagement and the damages and deterioration of my property forced me to take management myself . My experience is if you’re buying or selling a property give them a go . If you are a property owner wishing to rent your property then avoid them and seek business elsewhere.

Negative experience: Not the most professional real estate agent to be honest. We requested for our receipt for 5 days straight with the date on it but never received one, the guy we talked to Arthur Karkanis said the funds were being held but it was supposed to be for our rent ($3200). He kept promising us he would send the document through at the end of the day but never did his job properly. Same with the change of bond contributors, we called initially on Monday and Friday came and still nothing helpful from him. The RTA was way more responsive and sent the documents that were required for us whereas this guy Arthur promised and never delivered. Seriously, this real estate agency needs to look at how they work as I appalled by the service we receive! Unprofessional and unresponsive, would not recommend to anyone at all.

Negative experience: Laced with Deception I regret purchasing a property through this agency and want to share my experience to help others avoid the same pitfalls. The entire process was laced with deception from start to finish. The property was advertised as a 4-bedroom home, but it’s actually 3 bedrooms and a study. The “4th bedroom” has no window, no smoke alarm, and does not meet the legal definition of a bedroom under Queensland law. That’s not a minor oversight—it’s a clear case of false advertising, and possibly a breach of consumer law. We were told to “put our best foot forward” and assured there would be no second chance to increase bids—only to be drawn into a bidding war anyway. The agent blamed the sellers, but as professionals, they would have known this was likely. It felt planned and orchestrated to drive up the price. We were also told there was a tenant ready to move in immediately—this was entirely untrue, and seemed designed to create pressure and urgency. Look—we’re all for sellers getting the highest price, and we’re even happy with what we paid. But when you’re manipulated and lied to, it’s like being cheated, and that’s not a fair or ethical way to do business. I could understand if there was one isolated instance of dishonesty or omission. But when it happens three times in a single transaction, that’s not a coincidence—that’s a pattern. It suggests this kind of behaviour is part of the culture at this agency, and that’s what concerns me most. In my view, conscious choices were made to mislead or withhold key information for personal financial gain. That is not only unethical—it’s potentially illegal. I cannot recommend this agent or agency. Real estate should be built on trust, transparency, and fairness—and unfortunately, we experienced none of those.

Fantastic experience: We are not usually ones to take the time to write up a review, but it would be a true injustice for Jimmy if we did not reciprocate just a small amount of the time he spent to help us sell our house. We approached Jimmy initially for just a valuation of our property, not at all intending to sell. We were extremely lucky that Jimmy had just sold a property very similar to ours, and was able to capitalise on his clientele to generate interest in ours. In an amazing turn of events, Jimmy was able to note only sell our property within a very short time frame, but he was able to ensure everything went swiftly. It all went so well, that we happened to settle just before Christmas. Having sold properties before, we really valued Jimmy’s level of communication. He always ensured we were aware of what was happening and any interest in our property. Even when there was nothing to report on, he made sure we were left with no questions to be asked. He made selling for us completely stress-free and there could not have been a more seamless transaction – even the existing tenants were happy with the process! We are sad to have sold our property, but are extremely grateful for Jimmy for making the sale exciting and not a burden! We would highly recommend Jimmy to any one of our families and friends. Fantastic experience: I chose McGrath Estate Agents Townsville based on their professional service and follow up when searching for an agent. Jimmy Lockhart was very professional and courteous and I enjoyed dealing with him immensely. I was kept up to date and received regular follow ups from him and the rest of the staff on the progression and sale. A seamless sale with a great outcome.

Negative experience: Dreadful experience with them as a tenant. It would have been better if I had stayed in the caravan park cabin I rented upon arriving in Townsville. Breaches of minimum housing standards that that they took over 6 weeks before taking any action including: - vermin , plus ants crawling all over my wardrobe and bed every day - no food even in purchased at that stage - no curtains in the bedroom - - no running water in the laundry. I ended up fixing this myself - Multiple illegal entries without any notification in breach of legislation. - no full set of keys for both tenants - air conditioning smelt mouldy - toilet and bathroom not cleaned properly. - Dishwasher doesn't work and they have not even looked at the repairer's report or quotes. - So many more items and issues and each time we deal with them nothing happens and it requires continual follow up. Some of these items they were advised about in the last week of July, again early August and after chasing them up they only took action (by logging a job) on the 2 September. As a property owner myself I would never use this company and if the landlord was contactable I would reach out to let him know, unfortunately McGraths put their contact details on the lease in the landlord section. I have rented for over 20 years , in Australia and 4 other countries and I have never experienced anything like the poor service that comes with McGraths.
